I've known Darren since the summer before 7th grade. He was one of the most unique and naturally funny and talented people I have ever met. Memories of all the different automobiles he has owned and of how his presence at any gathering made it an event you were both fortunate and happy to have attended.
If you were fortunate enough to ever witness him playing whipeout as a "guest drummer" for a visiting band at Rafael's in Fridley (or anywhere), you would have experienced something really awe inspiring. The whole room standing, taking in his performance like nothing else you had ever seen, especially if the band had a double base drum, almost deafening clapping and shouting of appreciation. When he finished, he would return to our table packed with beers of appreciation from his new fans. He would play with so much finesse and heart, many of base drums met their demise.
There is so much to say about Darren that is simply not possible to summarize without risking minimizing the experience of knowing him.
I feel he left us all to soon and I'll miss him dearly. However, he lived his life with fewer restraints than most of us could ever imagine whiched made for a sometimes bumpy but always interesting journey.
Rest in peace my friend.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I went to grade school (Riverwood Elementary) with Darren and knew him all through high school. The last time I saw him was about 30 years ago at our friend’s wedding. In my mind, I always thought I’d see him again. My wife probably knows more Darren Ottem stories than she does stories about my own family. I remember him as just 100% fun at all times. I definitely remember riding in his black Mustang in high school which, let’s just say, went “pretty fast.” Just so very sorry to hear about this today. My heart goes out to his family. - Erik Belgum
